NIGHT AGONY BY ABISOLA ADEOYE

I'm tired of this off and on

Sometimes, I feel like I'm forcing it

Could it be wrong to let my emotions run?

I need to know what to do with this bit

Most nights, I'm hit by a wave of self-consciousness

I feel so inadequate

Could it be that he doesn't see my prettiness?

What can I do to be more up to his taste?

I think I try all my best

But it seems it's always wrong

I feel alone like a bird that has left its nest

If this is what people call love, then I don't want a part of it

You forget my day but remember hers

I feel like I'm chasing after you

I feel surrounded by bars

Someone get me out of this doom!

What do I have to do to please you?

What do I have to do to get it right?

Remember, I was once your boo

Now, I fear you are no longer my light.

Why do I have to fight for everything?

I thought I served my time already

I guess I was just deluding myself

Thinking I was off the hook.

CHILD MARRIAGE BY ABISOLA ADEOYE

"I was just 14 years old when my father called me into our sitting room for 'a tete-a-tete', he called it. You see, my father was a very strict man; I feared him a lot growing up. He said I should go pack my bags and get ready to go to Mallam Danladi's house the next day. Apparently, I was to be married to him and my bride price had already been paid..."

This and many more are stories you hear from young girls these days who have been thrown into marriages at the early stages of their lives. Child marriage is the union of a young girl to an older man (in most cases, a man old enough to be her father). Young girls who are thrust into this system are denied education and independence; instead, motherhood welcomes them with open arms and radiant smiles.

These girls are then subjected to so many derogatory things because they are unprepared for marriage. Some go through domestic violence, from the husband and even the wives the old man would have had which could result in so many health challenges because the abusers know the girls are not able to fight for themselves. Cases of marital rapes have also been heard all in the name of the husbands demanding for their rights in the bedroom. They are kids after all and who are in the best position to be cheated if not kids. Moreover, if they are questioned, they have a perfect and readymade answer - "I paid her brideprice so I own her".

Another thing is these men expect these girls to start procreating with immediate effect; then you start wondering if they actually need wives or breeding mares. Motherhood? Just like that? Is it that easy and simple? Soon you start hearing tales like: "I do not know what happened to him, Doctor, he just started having seizures or he just started crying and his temperature became so high...". These girls are not physically, emotionally and psychologically matured enough to have babies. They need nurturing and not the other way around. When they eventually get pregnant, in most cases, it results in a low survival rate for the mother and child and in few cases when both or only the mother survives, it can lead to post-partum depression due to the rigorous pain of labour.

When a young girl is trapped into an early marriage, she gets separated from her family and friends. She is then expected to play home and become mature all of a sudden when she is supposed to be playing like the child she is. This strips them of their identity, disempowers and makes them dependent on others all through their lives, thereby making them shadows of themselves.

Sometimes, it seems the society has forgotten that these kids are girls, not brides. Child marriage takes place as a result of poverty, illiteracy, traditional cultures, religious customs and the generally perceived notion that a woman's place is in a man's kitchen regardless of whatever degree she holds which all boils down to gender inequality. Now, I am not saying we do not have boy marriages but they are so few they may as well not exist. Child marriage does no good, it disregards the rights of children and turns them to empty shells battling with depression and all other life-threatening challenges.

He hit her hard
With his muscular hand.
Boom... gbam...
She fell to the ground.

He came close and bent to the ground
To continue what he started right there on the sand.
She does nothing right!
Always ready to start a fight
Am I your mate?
Really?
Why don't you go ask fate?

Boom... gbam...
Still on the ground
He made sure she ate of the sand.

Neighbors came running
Man this ain't funny
Won't you leave her?
Or would you rather kill her?

Boom.... Gbam...
He adjusted his stand
On hearing his neighbors sound.

The rest is a tale
Of the head and the tail
One with a temper
And the other a bad character

Gboom....Gbam...
There goes the sand
As she rise from the ground.

BLACK WOMAN

It's a lie
That you should submit
And that you can't exceed your limit
It's a lie
That you cannot try
That you are meant to consent to his every intent
It's a lie
That you are made to only lie on his bed and to his sexual urge attend
It's a lie
That you cannot be great
That like him you can't eat from the same plate
That it's your fate to wait and serve as a bait to his goals and aspirations
It's a lie
That you cannot have your own dream
That you cannot do it
That you are not fit
That you cannot sweep men off their feet with your wit
That you cannot make them feel the heat each time your lines you spit
It's a lie

So, my dear today, i'm here to tell you that your kind is rare
That you are unique
That your ink can birth words that will sink into the minds of generations
That you can overcome, perform, run, have fun and at the same time deliver
You are that messiah
The one we've been waiting for
The wait is over
Come on take over
Get up the ladder
Be a sister
Help a brother
Be a leader
A mother
An agent of change
And more importantly a human.

SMILE

The saying that life ain't a bed of roses is a melody that echoes like
the dim dum sound emitted by the flat surface beneath my chest. I
recalled the first time I heard the word. Dad has just returned from
work and as an observant kid I noticed the alteration in his
countenance. Though I couldn't really understand what happened at that
time but in the spirit of a child who love and adores his dad, I
walked up to him and asked: Dad what's wrong? He looked at me and
smiled. I felt his right hand run back and forth on the tender skin
above my bum. Not to worry son, life ain't a bed of roses he said.

There's one thing I learnt from Dad. That precious thing which have
come to be part of my being. His Smile. He was always smiling. At a
point, I recall mum made jokes of his smile; do you know you have a
smiling dad? She said one afternoon while we were having what could be
a family time out. The family of three laughed out loud and it took a
while before we resumed our chit chat.
I am grown and I have heard friends, families, colleagues and as many
as I come in contact with say: you are always smiling... One once
asked me? Is it that you don't have issues? I mean you are always
looking happy she said as she rounded of what I took as a comic
question.

Dear reader, the truth about life is this, IT AIN'T A BED OF ROSES! In
life you sometimes must strife. Don't expect things to always go
smoothly, in fact it won't always be smooth. But even at that, you
shouldn't go about with your problems written all over your face. You
shouldn't because you have issues become a hater, an abuser or
transfer aggression and respond inappropriately to issues, situations
and discussions. The fact is every living being has issues but you see
your reaction helps in positioning your mind to finding a lasting
solution to that particular situation.
Dear Reader, if you wouldn't mind I 'll gladly recommend a SMILE. When
faced with challenges, and difficult situations....try to put on a
smile. By the way, frowning and being hostile won't proffer a
solution. So, why not choose to be happy and help others do same.

I AM KCPWESH I CHOOSE TO SMILE, I CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY!!!

CHAPTER ONE

My father once told me, he said; "if you ever have to choose between
your wife and your mother do not think twice before you embrace your
wife"
It's been five years since he took his place with his father's in the
family tomb. Carved of mud, it had a spherical shaped entrance. I
often wondered what it felt like to occupy a pouch in the tomb.
It was a family thing and I was sure someday my curiosity would be satisfied.

Nike was fair and good to look upon. I had stumbled upon her years
back on my way to the farm. Memories from that day remain fresh and it
feels like it was only yesterday. The sun was in the east and the
atmosphere still had the mist of the night. My hat rested on my bald
scalp while my hoe embraced my left shoulders. I held a machete with
which I put intruding grasses in its place. I whistled continuously as
my feet embraced the cold red soil. She had a calabash on her head and
I need not be told she was returning from the stream. We exchanged
greetings and what normally should have taken less than a minute
became a conversation of about half an hour.
We fell in love and got married two years after father's demise. We
are a very happy couple but a storm threatens to tear us apart.

FEBUHARI

Tick tock tick tock
sssh... (silence) let the clock talk.

Everyday, we hear someone say; things are bad.
You walking down the street and right there is a gathered fleet
putting their so called sweet wit to use.
They paint pictures of deadly structures, holla nomenclatures, putting
the blame on the so called prominent name.

Tick tock... tick tock
sssh... (silence) let the clock talk.

A quick recap of the game.
Before he came was there pain?
Do the fleet gather to complain?
Before he came was there a name to take the blame?
Were things the same?

Sssh...silence
Hear what the clock has got to say.

We pray for change
Alas!
We've been blindfolded to see that what we ask is right here, within our range.
We complain and murmur with so much fervor
Energy that ought to be channeled towards profitable labor.

For so long we complain
oh, God please send the rain!
But this day as I saw the fleet gather in their usual manner
I heard clock whisper.
It said;
The key is you before we
The change chain is from you to me.
Enough of the complain
Enough of attaching the blame to a name
Enough!
The solution is for you to rise up and act.
Do something!
And more importantly, in February, walk and show some love; Febuhari.

NOTE
Lust and love are two different things. Lies told only to go through
the thighs are birthed by lust.

Remember, there are consequences for your actions.
Look before you leap. Abstinence is key!

INSPIRE
BY
POETIC MELZ AND PWESH

This week on Inspire we'll be considering the topic "YOUR GIFT"

Pwesh- Embedded in your court is a worth beyond the 'but'
Latent with intent, it is inherent.

Melz- So much space
Deep down depth
I'm drowning in your embrace
I'm bleeding from your love.

Pwesh - That little light yearns for expression.
Oh! That you will turn on the ignition
The key has been given
But, when will you with it break even?

Melz- A skill like diamond
Sour as the almond
Rich and armored
Worthy of its rumour.

Pwesh- There's is a great light in your court
When will you give expression to its worth?

NOTE
A gift is nothing till it's given. So bleed some love, express some
worth and be a Gift to someone.

De White Collar World

*De White Collar World*

            . By.

*Chiddy and Melz*

*Chiddy*- Folded sleeves
Of the voiceless choir
Wearing willing leashes
And prisoner bows
Tons many games
When the time is day
Cofee drunk thoughts
For candle lit dates

*Melz* - colourless collars
Clothed in desaturated colours
Endless callers
Chewing kolas
Boring corners
I need a cola

*Chiddy*-  I spread my wet white vests
Finely lined like the lover's party nests
In rows of perfect lines
Like the maze' demanding vines
Scatters of giant boulders
And trapped in caging songs
I bring the iron strings
To my pledged puppet master
And dance to ancient tunes
In fields of common sense
I pay the price
When I'm paid the price
At times deprived
Only to scream and cry

*Melz* - The friendly enemies
Competing and hating
Wearing and tearing
Behind closed doors
Of secretary and boss
Knives and swords
In the shape of sheets and pens
Snitches stitching their ends
And normal burying their dead

*Chiddy*- Oh when will I wake up sane?

INSPIRE
BY
POETIC MELZ AND PWESH

This week on Inspire we'll be considering the topic: "SUPERSTITION"

Melz - There's a shoe on the table
Eat and get unstable.
Seven baskets filled with bread
Eat all and forever live.

Pwesh - The snail will make you crawl
Its draw will make you fall.
The old woman with a squeezed face deserves no embrace
Who knows, she probably must have wiped out a race.

Melz - The image in the mirror
Isn't but your soul
Such is the error
Society the sole.

Pwesh- The mole has its goal
It is to breach your sole.
The mole has its goal
But be reminded, you and you alone own your soul.

NOTE
Bound not your heart by superstitions. Society owns the traditions,
you own your mind.

MEET POETIC MELZ

I call her my princess
Omo pupa to make sense.
She is as fair as the goddess of the nile
I will gladly walk a mile to catch her smile.

Beauty and brain
A combo that continually bursts my brain.
Ever shinning
Always smiling
A better sample of the one of whom its said took the apple.

Poetic Melz,
I know some have said; its either you or no one else.
But, I refuse to join the train of campaigners for fleshly gain
I would rather pitch my tent on the poetic train
To work with you
And you with me
Till you be found in me and me in you
POETRY our melting point.
